The Curtis pusher is almost ready. Its not going to fly today we still need more wires for control features but we plan to start the engine for the crowd.
The volunteers are all over the air plane for at least 4 hours before the debut.
Men are working on creating wires to hold the tail section.
The fuel lines are attached and the carborator is primed. Others fastening tiny screws to hold a rubber
gasket between the wings.
This was a very enjoyable experience to work with such a capable group.
Enjoy.
This ended up being a tricky job. They are suspended by two pins through a bracket on the wing struts. Jay designed and built these little wings for the pusher using old photos of the original plane. It took several men to get the bolts to fit. we also had to drill out the holes and then carefully place a castle nut on the ends. One more week left.
The wings are on and the aileron frames have been built. The group went to work in different areas. I helped clean up turn buckles for the remaining support wires. Another group worked on covering the ailerons. Still others worked with the radiator and pulley control system.
Last weekend the crew managed to attach the tail , rudder and two wings. Its amazing to see how the tension of the wires supports so many things in this airplane. It is basically a v-8 powered kite.
Today Jay was working on manufacturing the ailerons for the airplane. This airplane is very different from the Wright flyer in that its has true ailerons suspended between the wings. The Wright aircraft used wing warping which was very inefficient for banking. In fact the Wright brothers tried to stop Glen Curtis from selling and making airplanes by suing him for stealing their invention of wing warping . Curtis fought this in the courts until 1913 when the government stepped in and had the parties settle the suit.
So jay asked me to work on squaring up the middle wings and and removing the bow in the lower wing caused by the weight of the engine. Both of these tasks were accomplished by changing the tension on the wires supporting the middle wings. To do this I worked with another volunteer loosening and Tightening the wires until the wing moved. It was amazing physics in practical terms
During this time a fresh OX -5 engine arrived from our restoration expert in California. This engine was installed the middle wing and struts and top wing were put in place. The leading edge struts are slightly shorter than the trailing edge struts. The weight of this v-8 engine caused a problem in installing the brace wires.
Eventually we were able to get them connected. The next step was to attach the booms to the top and bottom struts. In order to attach these tubes a bolt a nut had to be inserted with out tearing the wing fabric. Eventually this was done. Lastly it was discovered that in order to attach the booms to the rear stabilizer a tab needed to be turned around pushed through the fabric.
September is only 6 weeks away. This weekend we focused on getting the landing gear and wheels back on the wing.
It only took a couple of days to disassemble this airplane but putting it back together is like working on an erector set with limited pictures.
The front wheel and rear braces were attached but were not meeting the holes in the engine stand. To solve this problem the seat was removed. this gave some ease to the brackets but then the lower brackets kept torquing and twisting the frame.
Similar problems were encountered in attaching the rear wheels.
The top middle wing, the seat, and the engine stand.
The middle wing is the last peice to be restored in fabric. This weekend we worked to reattach the wing brackets the hold the outer wings to the main fuselage. This was an interesting problem . The debate as to which position the brackets should in adition to what type of bolt would best work in fastening the bracket took at least an hour to achieve.
While several members struggled with the others worked on finishing the pilots eat and reassembling the motor stand to the middle wing. This stand has been rebuilt and should easily support the OX-5 V-8 motor.
This airplane crashed in the Mountains of eastern Oregon . The plane was recovered in the late 1980's and a complete restoration was done . This Friday the airplane will fly to Washington for air show. Many airplanes were moved out of the hanger including a 1900's Steam powered tractor.
Following the movement of the Boeing 40 we worked on the last wing of the pusher. This involved cutting and gluing fabric tape to reinforce the areas of the leading and trailing edges.
This airplane is in incredible shape. The engine is the same engine that we will use on the Pusher. It is a OX-5 v-8 that was built to power the Curtis Jenny. It has about 90 HP with an open valve train and water cooled.
The Command Aire was transported in a u haul truck from the mid west. The landing gear had to be reattached then the lower wings were bolted to the fuselage.
The tricky part was the top wing. We had to use the fork lift and many hands to line up the struts and wires.
Its amazing to think in the 1920's these planes were assembled by hand using just block and tackle.
There was also great progress made in the area of fabric application. A expert in the area antique airplane restoration came up to Hood river and taught some of the art of fabric application on wooden wings.
The fabric a modern polyblend is hand stiched to the ribs on the wings.
Later is is sprayed with an aluminum paint and a final coat of dope. The colors for the wings is a beige color.
The tail is a bright orange.
All the metal parts were labeled and then sanded, primed and painted. The wooden parts were reproduced in oak with new brass fittings. We relied on photos taken before the restoration. These photos showed us the position of the five v braces. At first the parts were wired together and then they were finally bolted together .
Each will discuss a specific part of the restoration.
This first entry is about the engine. The OX-5 engine is a aV-8. While we are waiting for the engine to be rebuilt in California , Bill is attempting to build an engine from the many extra parts here at the museum. This Saturday I saw him working on the oil rings. In these pictures you can see him filing the space in between the rings. The rings are tapped into the cylinder, measured for gap then adjusted.
The month featured the military planes and vehicles.
The restoration continued and visitors got a glimpse of the crew in action.

The wing fabric was installed on the tail and rudder.

The leading edge of the center wing had a thin sheet of plywood which was rotted and needed replacement. This needed to be bent and wrapped around the ribs. In order to get this accomplished the wood had to be soaked and strapped on the wing.

The engine stand and landing gear parts are a combination of steel tubing and wood. These parts were laid out and reassembled . This was tricky in that many parts looked alike. It was like putting together a giant erector set.
However several volunteers showed up and many thing were worked on.
There
was a crew that rebuilt the supports and gussets for the landing gear.
Over 90 years of use the wood has fatiqued and become crushed from the
load. We had redo the supports connected to the lower wing.
Another group worked on the seat rebuild. There was also metal parts that needed sand blasting and cleaning on the wire wheel.
Finally the group working on the brass straps for the keel were getting closer to completion.
The Metal frame and landing gear tubes were painted gloss black. You can see how the paint was applied out side the hanger.
The tail sections were primed with a special primer that allows the fabric to be glued in place.
There are several groups working in different areas. One group continues to clean up frame parts. Soon they will be primed and painted.
Another group is working on the restoration of the lower center wing. This wing supports the landing gear and the V-8 motor. Several of the ribs in the leading edge required replacement due to rot.
The ends caps of the wings were warped and required rebuilding . The crew had to reconstruct the pieces carefully to maintain the original airfoil.
Antoher crew has been working for several weeks on the seat. A new seat is being built out of wood and will soon be assembled.
Still anothe r group is working in brass recreating hold down for the keel and landing gear .
All this work is very interesting with a high learning curve.
One of the modifications was to create a frame work from steel tubing. The other was to use modified wings from the Curtis Jenny. In this post we are dealing with the frame.
Many of the frame parts were rusted with years of paint applied. The same was true for the tail structure. The crew has to remove this paint and rust using sand blasting for small parts andpolishing with wire wheels. you can see how tedious this work was.
After the paint was removed the parts were primed and then painted.
I was absent for a week however I didnt miss much. Last week only a few volunteers showed up. So far the following things have been accomplished. The motor was sent off to be restored. It may take 6 months but the museum has an extra OX-5 thats just fresh from a rebuild.
Today there were many volunteers and alot of work was done.
The seat was disassembled and a pattern was made. Metal parts were painted in primer while old parts were cleaned by sand blasting.
The wing was disassembled and checked for rot. Also the keel and pulley systems were disassembled and labeled.
I had the privilege of working the lower wing. The leading edge was created by a thin sheet of plywood stretched over some fragile ribs. In order to remove this material we had to carefully dig out hundreds of tiny nails. There were shims that supported the vertical struts but they distorted by years of wear and had to be removed. Finally the end cap ribs were removed to make new ones.
Last Saturday a group of volunteers met to continue the work on the Curtis pusher. It is interesting to be around this group and listen to their analysis of the various problems this plane presents. The engine had been completely opened up and the main and rod bearing s checked. The low end of the engine seem to look great with little apparent wear. Ben assigned jobs and mine was to remove the wheels and take a spoke out of one of them. The tire was completely flat and wires were sticking out from the side walls. To remove it we used a vice and a saws all. I then went back to the frame and began labeling parts. This is a must if we are going to reassemble this machine. The landing gear is a tri-cycle type with a wooden center piece . Connect to the center piece are several braces which form a V. We labeled these V brace 1 ,2 etc. As they came off they were taken to a sand blasting machine for removal of paint and crude. This could be the bottle neck in the project be3cause so much material need cleaning and there is only one machine to it. Later in the day the entire frame was taken apart and labeled. Next week a new wooden yoke will be brought in and fitted.Dan Evanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09907960542884421268noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3971809133565411817.post-11493526171402701892013-01-30T09:20:00.000-08:002013-04-07T15:04:35.681-07:00Engine dismantlingLast week on a Tuesday I drove from Portland to Hood river to help in the dismantling of the OX-5 engine. I met Bill at the museum and the two of walked out to H-1. When we entered the hanger the engine was on the engine stand and the hanger felt like a refrigerator. Bill is an expert in aviation engines and my experience lies in antique car engines so i followed his lead. The first step was to remove the rocker arm assembly. That was interesting in that they were connected by a water jacket pipe. One valve was actuated by a pulling push rod while the other valve was opened by a pushing rod.
Next the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds were removed. Our objective was to check the cylinders for wear.
Finally the number one cylinder was removed and Bill used a device to check the trueness off the cylinder and the amount of wear it had. The cylinders looked good.
